Day 12 Hobart to Alice Springs
We arranged for a taxi to pick us up at 4:15 to head out to
the airport….The airport got moving at 5 and we took off for Melbourne right on
time at 6am… Some bits of this trip are a bit of a mission! After a brief layover in Melbourne – and it
was brief this time – we flew across the desert to Alice Springs…
As in Hobart, the plane was met by an airport link bus that
takes you right to your hotel…very convenient and a bit cheaper than a taxi…Our
bus driver took us on a bit of a tour of the town before dropping us off – He
heartily approved of our choice – locally owned by ‘good people’ – and a bit
out of town. Apparently he came for a visit to Alice Springs and has now stayed
47 years….
I’m not sure it will have the same effect on us – but it is
quite different to any place else we have been…the population seems to be
largely aboriginal. It is very hot and
dry – though they had a storm with flash floods two days ago.
We settled in and then walked into town for lunch and some shopping. We are off on our first real trekking
experience tomorrow…Rob needed a hat and I needed a larger water bottle.
Missions accomplished, we returned to the hotel’s pool and
air conditioning with some relief!
We are unlikely to be in contact for the next few
days….Uluru and Kings Canyon await….
